Through the last couple of decades, encyclopaedias have transformed significantly, becoming digital and born-digital, full of multimedia, and today among other characteristics being well connected via hypertext and metadata. At the same time, in digital humanities an increasing emphasis is being put on mapping or geotagging archival data, with special emphasis on networking projects and international cooperation. Digital platforms are being designed for publishing, describing, presenting, searching or browsing through historical sources. Some projects take the temporal aspect further, enabling not just retrieving historical data but also offering navigation through space and time via interactive maps. Encyclopaedias joining such initiatives would allow for new ways to explore its content and connecting encyclopaedic knowledge with specific artefacts and locations so users could visit them. Some encyclopaedic projects include a similar approach to their content, but further development is needed. In this paper, authors analyse existing conditions among web-based encyclopaedic projects (such as the Brockhaus Encyclopaedia and the Slovenian biographical lexicon), the data types appropriate for geotagging, opportunities and perspectives. This paper will also explain how using geotagging enhances encyclopaedias' characteristics. This would contribute to further encyclopaedia's interactivity and allow for new ways for users to explore content and learn, in turn contributing to its greater usage.

The paper illustrates the enhancement of knowledge of architecture from 1945 onwards in Genoa by means of the publication on the Geoportal of the Municipality, which was developed with open-source systems, of a proper dataset and tools for digital storytelling for citizens. The implementation on the municipal Geoportal of a section called “Contemporary Architecture from 1945 onwards in Genoa” was made possible through collaboration between the University of Genoa Architecture and Design Department (DAD) and the Municipality of Genoa Office for Geographical Information Systems. The data related to the buildings in the Municipality of Genoa were extracted from a previous study about contemporary architecture in Liguria carried out by DAD. The case study introduced two tools for the promotion and enhancement of knowledge of such architecture, a map on which the buildings are located and associated with an information form and geostories with in-depth information on selected buildings, the latter of which can be sorted based on thematic itineraries or by author. The use of integrated services contributes to the competitiveness and sustainability of the city, raising citizens’ awareness of the value of the architecture of the second half of the 20th century and thus activating conservation processes as advocated in the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations General Assembly.

The article presents the project Spatial Analysis of the public library network in Slovenia; the approach, related work, methods used, main findings, impacts, and transferability to other environments. The network of public libraries in Slovenia is quite well developed and consists of slightly over 1,000 service points, i.e., local libraries, their external service points, and bookmobile stops. Public libraries are one of the pillars that preserve the Slovenian language and enhance the local social life. The travel distance to the nearest library is highly important, even more when taking into account social gatherings, access to online databases, and 203 participation in educational and other meetings. Spatial analysis has been performed by using the methods of geographical information systems. A part of the project is also the development of a lightweight Web geodatabase/geoprocessing tool for the planning of library services. Library administrators could directly and easily use the tool for daily and strategic planning to analyze in detail the spatial level of the sociodemographic characteristics of the potential users in the vicinity. The findings have shown significant differences among regions, recommended improvements of the library network, suggested the refinement of the role of the library services according to the perceived needs of the local people, and confirmed the importance of the mobile libraries for rural and remote areas.
