Edema in Renal Diseases – Current View on Pathogenesis

Abstract: QUESTIONS @ POINT OF CARE markable. One month before admission minimal proteinuria was found. Physical examination did not reveal any significant signs and symptoms beyond edema. Urinalysis demonstrated nephrotic range proteinuria (10 g/day) without any abnormalities of the urinary sediment. Total blood count showed hemoglobin 12.5 g/dL, an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 40 mm/h, hematocrit 54%. The main biochemical data are summarized in Table I. No monoclonal component was found either in the serum or the… Show more

“…The significance of damage to podocytes and swelling of the kidneys as a universal mechanism of development of renal failure [3] has been confirmed today. The relevance of the study of the dependence of the renal function on its size is established [9].…”

“…Patients with low albumin will lose colloidal osmotic (oncotic) pressure, and experience an extracellular uid shift from the intravascular space into the extravascular space (Gounden, Vashisht, and Jialal 2020). Notably, hypoalbuminemia coupled with excess extracellular uid may result in co-occurring oedema and hypovolemia (Bobkova et al 2016). Such a mechanism has also been suggested to contribute to COVID-19 (J.…”
