“…Some information is available on thrips management in tobacco (McPherson et al , 2003bPappu et al 2000;Csinos et al 2001;Groves et al 2001), but additional information is needed on the timing and use patterns of available thrips control options and their impacts on TSWV infection. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the effects of insecticide imidacloprid and plant activator acibenzolar-S-methyl combinations and application timings on thrips population densities, TSWV infection, and plant growth and development on ßue-cured tobacco.…”

“…Therefore, the incidence of TSWV at an economically damaging level and extremely severe symptoms represented serious threat for tobacco in Serbia, as it was reported for many tobacco-growing regions in the world. TSWV infection was responsible for destructive epidemics in tobacco throughout USA (Pappu et al, 2000b), in Eastern Europe and Balkan countries (Chatzivassiliou et al, 2004;Hristova et al, 2001). Recent first report on TSWV in tobacco in Italy indicated its further spread in tobacco in Europe (Carrieri et al, 2011).…”

“…Actigard is a plant activator that elicits a plant defense response to provide protection from pathogens (Ruess et al 1996;Lawton et al 1996). Recently, Actigard significantly reduced the disease incidence caused by tomato spotted wilt tospovirus and the percent enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) positive plants in flue-cured tobacco plants at all four locations tested (Pappu et al 2003). Unlike Actigard, alum and Na 2 HPO 4 seem to have a similar degree of impact in reducing the MYMV disease incidence under natural conditions.…”
