Effect of adding ribbond fibres on marginal adaptation in class II composite restorations in teeth with affected dentine

Abstract: To evaluate the feasibility and effect on marginal adaptation in class II composite restoration reinforced with polyethylene fibres in teeth with affected dentine using scanning electron microscopy. Method and material: Class II cavities with dimension 1.5 +0 .25 pulpal depth and 4 ± 0.25 mm buccolingual width/.were prepared on proximal surfaces extracted human molars or premolar with affected/sound dentine on gingival margin. The etching priming and restorations were done in prepared samples as per manufactur… Show more

“…The marginal adaptation of the gingival margins of the restorations was assessed using SEM and expressed in terms of percentage of gapped margin/ total margin. This method was chosen because it is reliable and truly quantitative method as it avoids the shortcomings of the classical microleakage assessment methods 19,43 .…”

“…Recent studies investigated the application of reinforcing fibers in composite resin restorations and highlighted that incorporation of UHMWPE fibers seemed to have beneficial effects regarding tooth resistance and longevity of the dental restorations 37–45 . However, the effect of UHMWPE fibers combined with different restorative materials and techniques on reducing the polymerization shrinkage stresses that are developed during photopolymerization and the detrimental effects that may follow such as bond failure and marginal microleakage, has not yet been widely investigated.…”
