Effect of advanced manufacturing technology, concurrent engineering of product design, and supply chain performance of manufacturing companies

Abstract: As competition shifts away between competitors to supply chains, simultaneous sharing of technical expertise on product design is key to manufacturing success. Thus, purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of concurrent engineering of product design (CEPD) on the relationship between advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) and supply chain performance (SCP). The paper is a cross-sectional study, and data was collected among top managers of manufacturing companies. Cluster and systematic random… Show more

“…Most LM practices, JIT and QM in particular, rely on integration of processes with suppliers and customers, and modern AAMTs which support external integration can play an important role in their effective deployment (Moyano-Fuentes et al, 2012;Moyano-Fuentes et al, 2016;Shah and Ward, 2007). Integrated AAMT systems support effectiveness of JIT manufacturing through information sharing across the value chain, and development of information-based approaches for superior demand planning, staging and movement of physical products, and streamlining voluminous and complex financial work processes (Rai et al, 2006;Singhry et al, 2016).…”

“…Research related to product design based on CAD, innovative product, and design quality (28.9%) are still in the nascent stage. Many studies have been focused on product design (Page, 2014) and design process (Singhry, Abd Rahman, & Imm, 2016).…”

“…Some initiatives can minimise errors in assembly and installation such as designing paired parts instead of left/right hand parts [25]. Furthermore, pairedpart designs support economy of scale in the supply chain by doubling purchasing volume when compared to mirror image parts [26,27].…”
