Effect of Age at Menopause on Blood Pressure in Postmenopausal Women

Abstract: Our results clearly demonstrated that higher blood-pressure levels in postmenopausal women depend on age at menopause and postmenopausal period, but not subjects' age, suggesting that a longer absence of female gonadal steroids represents a major factor contributing to increased blood pressure in elderly women.

“…18,19 Both early onset of menopause and a long postmenopausal period are associated with higher blood pressure levels. 20 Moreover, hypoestrogenemic premenopausal women diagnosed with the polycystic ovary syndrome and menstrual irregularities because of ovarian failure are at a higher risk of developing hypertension, coronary artery disease, and adverse cardiovascular events and experience menopause at an earlier age than healthy controls. 21 Interestingly, a recent report indicates that physiological 17␤-estradiol treatment in patients with premature ovarian failure results in significant reductions in blood pressure, whereas no effects on blood pressure were observed using synthetic ethinylestradiol.…”

“…150 Cross-sectional studies indicate that menopause increases the risk of hypertension by twofold, even after adjusting for factors, such as age and BMI. 151 Both early onset of menopause and a long postmenopausal period are associated with higher blood pressure levels. 152 Moreover, hypoestrogenemic premenopausal women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and menstrual irregularities because of ovarian failure are at a higher risk of developing hypertension, CAD, and adverse CV events and experience menopause at an earlier age than healthy controls.…”
