“…While for undoped ZrO 2 the tetragonal phase is completely transformed to m ‐ZrO 2 by calcination ( X t <1%), the addition of Eu 3+ stabilizes the t ‐phase even after calcination, resulting in pure t ‐ZrO 2 in case of 5 mol% Eu 3+ ( X t =92%). The observed stabilization of tetragonal ZrO 2 is well known and in agreement with previous reports on rare earth‐doped ZrO 2 22,29 . The average crystallite sizes of the as‐prepared ZrO 2 :Eu 3+ samples derived by Scherrer's equation are in a range from 14 to 17 nm.…”

“…Growth of the ZrO 2 particles and the removal of hydroxyl groups are also mentioned by Gosh et al 14 Further, defects may migrate to the surface leading to a local increase of the degree of disorder. Consequently, the local symmetry of the Eu 3+ centres located at the surface becomes lower resulting in the increased transition probability of the 5 D 0 – 7 F 2 transition 22 . According to De Vincente et al 42 the migration of luminescent species to the surface of the crystals causes an increase in the distance between neighbouring Ln 3+ promoting emission.…”

“…recently reported the dependence of the upconversion PL intensity from ZrO 2 :Er/Yb on crystal size and structure . Similarly, crystal size and structure effects on PL intensity of ZrO 2 :Eu 3+ and ZrO 2 :Dy 3+ were reported in the literatures . Interestingly, the crystal size and structural dependence was also reported on TiO 2 :Er 3+ .…”

“…The high resolution micrograph of the zirconia film showed grains with diameters in the size range 5-10 nm. It is well known that, after high temperature annealing, the zirconia nanoparticles at room temperatures exhibit the tetragonal structure when the crystallite size is less than 30 nm in diameter [22,26,27]. The composition of the zirconia film was examined by AES.…”
