Effect of calcium carbonate on clinical compliance of apatitic calcium phosphate bone cement

Abstract: Clinical requirements for calcium phosphate bone cements were formulated in terms of the initial setting time, the final setting time, the cohesion time, and the ultimate compressive strength. Two cement formulations were tested. Biocement F was made of a powder containing alpha-tertiary calcium phosphate, precipitated hydroxyapatite, and monetite. Biocement D powder also contained CaCO3. The liquid/powder (L/P) ratio of the cement paste and the accelerator concentrations (% Na2HPO4) in the cement liquid were … Show more

“…the ability of a cement to stay in one piece during setting) is used. The approach in all the latter studies has been to test the ''cohesion'' of the cement during setting in an aqueous solution, typically in water [19] or in Ringer's solution [20][21][22]. Basically, it appears that an increase of the cement viscosity, e.g.…”

“…HAC has been reported to be highly biocompatible in vivo setting bone void filler with the potential to be remodelled into normal bone [22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. It has been recently shown in an animal model that HAC can also be used as a carrier material for sustained release of gentamicin in the treatment of chronic bone infection [29].…”

“…Addition of dispersing agent leads to a more fluid system, so that a lower L/P ratio can be used and eventually higher mechanical properties could be obtained [21]. The initial setting time and the slope of the setting curve can be easily modified by the use of biocompatible additives [22].…”
