Effect of Dietary Copper and Zinc Supplementation on Semen Quality of Murrah Bulls

Abstract: The effect of dietary supplementation of Cu and Zn on semen quality parameters and certain bio-chemicals parameters were evaluated in Murrah bulls. Twelve mature Murrah bulls (4-6 years of age) were divided into three groups (n=4) T1, T2, and T3 based on semen volume and concentration and were fed as per ICAR standard (2013). However, the animals were supplemented with 0%, 25%, and 50% Cu and Zn above the basal diet in T1, T2 and T3 groups, respectively for 180 days. Quantitative and qualitative characteristic… Show more

“…Scott and Bynes, (1980) opined that the ionic concentration of semen has a key role in regulating sperm motility either by contributing the intracellular ionic composition or by their osmolality. Majumder et al, (2020) reported trace minerals like copper and zinc improve the quality and quantity attributes of semen in cattle. According to Stoss (1983), osmolality, pH and ionic composition of semen are the most important factor responsible for inhibition or activation of sperm motility.…”

“…Згодовування бугаям-плідникам Cu в кількості 25 % і 50 % вище норми сприяє збільшенню об'єму еякуляту та концентрації сперматозоїдів. Однак тривале споживання високого рівня Cu (50 %) призводить до порушення цілісності акросоми та мембрани сперматозоїдів [32].…”

“…Semen producing ability and quality of individual bull is highly essentials to ensure the supply of superior quality germplasm for maintaining the production as well as the conservation of indigenous breeds. Recent studies also have supported the fact that supplementation of zinc has improved qualitative as well as the quantitative aspects of semen quality in bulls (Thakur et al, 2019;Majumder et al, 2020). So, a study was undertaken to study the effect of organic zinc supplementation on semen parameters in Kankrej bulls.…”
