“…Sprague-Dawley rats were fed each of the experimental diets for 4 weeks and 4 days by a 3-hour feeding protocol. For abbreviations see Tables 1 and 2. comparable to high fat (ϳ40% of total energy from fat) and low fat (ϳ10% of total energy from fat) [35,36]. Thus, we used 1C diet with minimum essential fatty acids as a control, and selected 10% (w/w, estimated 20% calories), as the moderate fat intake level to compare the inhibitory effect of dietary fats on lipogenesis.…”

“…Sesamin is a known lipid modulator well investigated in mammalian systems [1][2][3]. To our knowledge it has never been investigated in fish.…”

“…Sesamin inhibits cholesterol absorption and synthesis, and tocopherol hydroxylation and urinary excretion by Cytochrome P450 in rats and humans [1,[13][14][15]. The methylenedioxyphenyl group of sesamin is known to affect cytochrome P450-dependent drug oxidation [16].…”

“…Sesamin is a natural lignan present in sesame seeds and oil in relatively high amounts (Moazzami & Kamal‐Eldin ). The properties of sesamin as a lipid modulator have been investigated positively (increased of PUFA concentration) in mammalian systems, specifically in rats (Mizukuchi, Umeda‐Sawada & Igarashi ; Ide, Hong, Ranasinghe, Takahashi, Kushiro & Sugano ) and in human lipid metabolism (Jeng & Hou ). The use of sesamin as a modulator of LC‐PUFA composition in fish was tested successfully on rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) (Trattner, Kamal‐Eldin, Brannas, Moazzami, Zlabek, Larsson, Ruyter, Gjoen & Pickova ; Vestergren, Trattner, Pan, Johnsson, Kamal‐Eldin, Brännäs, Moazzami & Pickova ).…”
