Effect of Dietary Flaxseed Oil Supplementation on the Redox Status, Haematological and Biochemical Parameters of Horses’ Blood

Abstract: This study compared the effect of two dietary vegetable oils on plasma biochemical indices, haematological parameters, and redox status of horses. Forty riding horses (20 mares and 20 stallions) of the Malopolski breed were divided equally into two groups that were similar in terms of age, sex, and body weight (on average 530 ± 30 kg). The horses received soybean oil (SO) or flaxseed oil (FO) in the amount of 25 mL per 100 kg BW/day. After 60 days, blood was collected for biochemical and haematological analyse… Show more

“…Our results showed that rats treated with flax seeds oil improved in total leucocytes, lymphocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils and monocytes. Hendawi et al, 2016 reported that rats treated with flax seeds oil amelioration total white cells and their differentiation, this improvement may be attributed to flax seeds oil's protective effect through the high content of antioxidant agents such as beta-carotene and tocopherols.Flax seeds oil enhanced leucogram in horses, flax seeds oil exerts a beneficial effect by stimulating antioxidant defense mechanisms of horses and reducing the severity of oxidative stress (Sembratowicz et al, 2020). Basophils in all groups of this study exhibited zero.…”

“…Thus, reagents developed for the quantification of human HDL and LDL are frequently proven inaccurate in veterinary species [ 11 , 12 ]. Several studies evaluating HDL and LDL in equids have not included or cited validation of the method for use in equids [ 13 , 14 ]. The Lipoprint ® assay uses high-resolution polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to rapidly assess human LDL and HDL at the subfraction level.…”

“…Oils such as rice bran and flaxseed are marketed as multipurpose equine nutritional supplements. Both oils contain components that reduce oxidative damage and inflammation, including phytosterols and vitamin E, which contain tocopherols and tocotrienol [ 11 ]. Both oils contain essential fatty acids; however, flaxseed oil contains a greater amount of the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), than rice bran oil.…”
