Effect of direct aging and annealing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg fabricated by selective laser melting

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to systematically investigate the effect of the heat treatment process parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the selective laser melting (SLM) AlSi10Mg alloy. Design/methodology/approach The samples with very low porosity were fabricated with optimized processing parameters on a self-developed SLM system. The heat treatment of using the temperature of 170°C∼400°C and the holding time of 0.5∼12 h was studied, and the evolution of the microstructure and mechanica… Show more

“…However, the main weakness of the high cooling rate lies in the generation of considerable residual stresses in the as-built components. The need to decrease the tensional state of the built samples led to applying stress-relieving treatments after the PBF-LB/M process [ 125 ]. In addition, to increase the strengthening of PBF-LB/M alloys, different thermal post-processing treatments are often performed.…”

“…strength of the WAAM aluminum alloy needs to be increased to a level close to its forging counterpart through WAAM process optimization or through auxiliary methods such as interlayer hammering [19]. Since 2219 aluminum alloy is a kind of precipitation-hardening alloy, dispersion hardening through heat treatment is a common choice [20]. Solution treatment and aging treatment (T6 tempering) are usually performed to improve the strength.…”

“…In this process, the powder bed is melted by a focused laser beam in a layer-wise fashion with extremely high cooling rates (up to 105 K/s) [3]. The increasing interest of industry in high-strength and light-weight materials justifies the boom in demand for Al-based alloys [4]. Although the Al-based alloys are attractive for an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, their PBF-LB processing is often proven to be critical for both printability and strength [5].…”
