Effect of heterogeneous and homogeneous polymerisation on the structure of pNIPAm nanogels

Abstract: The choice of the polymerisation temperature and initiator in the synthesis of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based nanogels can significantly influence their structure, morphology and thermoresponsive properties.

“…Triethoxy groups hydrolyzed to give silanols under acidic conditions and silanols condensed to form a siloxane linkage, thus causing the cross-linking of the chains. A phase separation technique, 8 hydrophobic liquid template polymerization, 9 porosigen technique in the presence of additive or pore-forming agents such as poly(lactic acid) nanospheres, poly(ethylene glycol), and modified cellulose, 10 and the formation of gas bubbles during the polymerization process may generate fast responsive macroporous networks. Vdovchenko and coworkers studied the effect of phase separation during polymerization and showed a significant influence on the particle size and internal structure, as well as on the thermoresponsive and interfacial behavior of PNIPA nanogels.…”

“…Vdovchenko and coworkers studied the effect of phase separation during polymerization and showed a significant influence on the particle size and internal structure, as well as on the thermoresponsive and interfacial behavior of PNIPA nanogels. 8 Zhang and Jandt investigated the hydrophobic liquid template method to prepare a PNIPA hydrogel with superfast shrinking kinetics. In this method, using polydimethylsiloxane as a liquid template, a porous PNIPA hydrogel was simply obtained by removing the liquid template.…”

“…In addition, lower values of electrophoretic mobility were observed for microgels cross-linked with the lower amount of DA. The reason could be a more soft structure, i.e ., less cross-linked, of microgel particles suggesting the efficient cross-linking ability of DA …”

“…The reason could be a more soft structure, i.e., less crosslinked, of microgel particles suggesting the efficient cross-linking ability of DA. 36 With the aim of confirming the cross-linking role of dopamine-acrylamide (DA), the thermo-responsiveness of microgels synthesized was quantify through the calculation of the swelling ratio defined by the next expression: (dp 25 /dp 55 ), 3 in which dp 25 and dp 55 have average hydrodynamic diameters at 25 and 55 °C, respectively. The less cross-linked microgel exhibited the highest swelling ratio, such as 5.3 for 2 mol % of the DA cross-linked microgel while 2.8 for the 12 mol % DA crosslinked one, confirming the cross-linking ability of the DA.…”

“…This polymer has been discussed and implemented for numerous applications (Lanzalaco and Armelin, 2017;Bilardo et al, 2022). Besides, it has been the object of research in numerous studies-both experimental (Rizzi et al, 2021;Vdovchenko et al, 2021;Liu et al, 2022) and computational (Pang et al, 2010;Bruce et al, 2019;García and Hasse, 2019). We chose to simulate a 20-mer of PNIPAM, since it is long enough to show a Coil-Globule transition, while not being unnecessarily long.…”
