Effect of matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors on microtensile bond strength of dental composite restorations to dentin in use of an etch‐and‐rinse adhesive system

Abstract: Aim This study assesses the effect of matrix metalloproteinases on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of an etch‐and‐rinse adhesive system. Methods This in vitro study evaluated 88 extracted premolars. The teeth were sectioned to expose dentin and were then randomly divided into four groups (n = 22). In group 1 (control), dentin surface was etched, and Adper Single Bond 2 was applied. In groups 2–4, dentin surface was etched and chlorhexidine (CHX), 1‐ethyl‐3‐(3‐dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), and dime… Show more

“…Due to these unprotected collagen fibrils, the hybrid layer is hydrolyzed, and bond strength decreases. The durability of dentin‐resin bonding could be improved by the application of MMP inhibitors (Saffarpour, Valizadeh, Amini, Kharazifard, & Rohaninasab, 2020; Shen et al, 2020). Micromechanical interlocking is enhanced by the reactions between MMP substrate and inhibitors that enable the conjunction of MMP inhibitors and dental adhesive systems (Frassetto, Breschi, Turco, et al, 2016; Saffarpour et al, 2020).…”

“…It has been proposed that activation of carboxylic groups and cross‐linking of collagen fibrils by EDC preserve the dentin–resin bond mechanical properties (Liu et al, 2011; Tezvergil‐Mutluay et al, 2012). Various EDC solutions have been investigated to find a protocol of EDC dentin surface coating that best improves the bond strength over time; however, little attention has been paid to radicular dentin (Mazzoni, Angeloni et al, 2013; Mazzoni et al, 2018; Saffarpour et al, 2020; Tang et al, 2016).…”
