“…In addition, the oxygen and hydroxyl groups on the NC‐LAP surface can establish hydrogen bonds with MPD, and thus, more MPD can be adsorbed onto the particle surface for reaction with TMC. [ 44 ] Furthermore, PEG200 trapped in the clay interlayer can react with TMC to form poly(ether ester)s, [ 45 ] which may also contribute to the increase in selective‐layer thickness.…”

“…However, with further increase in NC‐LAP loading to 0.4 wt%, an abrupt drop in salt rejection is observed possibly due to the formation of defects at higher NC‐LAP loadings. In other words, since NC‐LAP are coated and attached onto the PSf surface through van der Waals interactions and its particle size can swell up by sorbing water molecules in the aqueous solution, [ 44,48 ] this may induce voids among particles. [ 49 ] For thinner NC‐LAP layers, the grown polyamide during the thin‐film polymerization could penetrate the NC‐LAP layers and anchor the nanoclays onto the substrate and polyamide through hydrogen bond interactions.…”

“…However, PP is a hydrophobic polymer with poor oxygen barrier properties and low affinity with hydrophilic fillers. Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and nano-sized clays are well known for their hydrophilic fillers that improve polymers’ mechanical strength and oxygen barrier properties [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. CNFs are produced by a variety of materials, such as bleached wood pulp and cotton linters, and exhibit a great performance even with low composite content [ 9 ].…”

“…These coatings have also a better barrier owing to the important fraction of clay that can be achieved. New techniques such as layer-by-layer (LbL) have succeeded in depositing thin nanocomposite coatings with good orientation, 12 dispersion, and intercalation of clay platelets. This methodconsists in the successive deposition of thin layers (polymers and/or nanofiller) on a substrate with numerous types of interlayer interactions to hold these layers together (electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, etc.).…”
