Effect of periodontal dressing on non‐surgical periodontal treatment outcomes: a systematic review

Abstract: Placement of periodontal dressing right after non-surgical mechanical therapy can be beneficial in improving overall short-term clinical outcomes, although more controlled studies are still needed to validate this finding.

“…The maximum cohesive strength under tensile force was evaluated. 32 This mechanical property is important since adequate mechanical properties are highly desirable in a periodontal dressing to protect the wound. 32 The experimental dressing groups Ea and Eb base materials showed similar results to Barricaid ® , which in turn, indicates that the experimental materials would have a similar clinical performance.…”

Despite this, the incorporation of alphahumulene significantly impaired the mechanical properties of both Ea and Eb formulations (p < 0.05).…”

“…wound area, provide greater comfort to the patient and prevent the occurrence of an excessive formation of granulation tissue. 2 Dental materials recommended for periodontal dressing can be grouped into three main categories: a) zinc oxide and eugenol based, b) zinc oxide without eugenol based, and c) those based in other products. 3 Eugenol-containing materials have been used over the years and they have been related to the occurrence of allergic reactions inflammation, delayed wound healing, tissue necrosis, and inhibition of fibroblast proliferation.…”

“…The wound repair or regeneration happens following several subsequent healing events. 1 The oral cavity unlike the other parts of the body is repeatedly exposed to the harmful septic environment which may jeopardize the new connective tissue attachment's formation or maturation. It is important to note about the oral cavity is that it continuously undergoes chemical, thermal, and mechanical damages which may lead to failure of the treatment.…”
