Effect of physical disturbance on reproductive performance in the spiny lobster,Jasus edwardsii

Abstract: A study was conducted to examine the effects of physical disturbance on Jasus edwardsii spiny lobster broodstock during ovarian recrudescence through to larval hatch. Undisturbed broodstock were held in relative isolation and subjected to minimal human disturbance, which contrasted with weekly air exposure and handling of the disturbed animals. Broodstock behavioural response, phyllosoma number, competency, and survival in culture were examined. A higher proportion of broodstock from the undisturbed treatment … Show more

“…To assess the biological impact of air gun exposure, three primary concerns were investigated. The first was the loss of eggs either through direct mortality or caused by over-grooming of the egg bundle by the female, which is a known behavioural response to stress 28 . This concern was not supported, as exposure to signals from seismic air guns did not result in any apparent egg bundle loss, nor were there any differences in fecundity between control and exposed lobsters from any of the three exposure levels.…”

“…The spiny lobster from the family Palinuridae is a useful model for marine invertebrates, as it is the most valuable single species capture fishery in Australia and spiny lobsters are amongst the most valuable fishery species worldwide 26 , with an annual catch of over 81,000 tonnes in 90 countries worth an estimated US$775 million 27 . If seismic air gun exposure causes maternal stress 28 , egg mortality, delayed development or severe morphological abnormality 17 21 , this ecologically and financially important decapod crustacean family could be devastated by compromised reproductive output and reduced recruitment.…”

“…The basic environmental parameters of water quality, temperature, salinity, photoperiod, light intensity, and culture vessels were constant throughout the study and therefore unlikely to have preferentially affected reproductive performance. Likewise, handling stress, a known contributor to egg loss (Smith and Ritar 2005), was kept to a minimum and randomly distributed. Broodstock survival was not adversely affected by any of the diets provided and suggests all diets are suitable for maintenance of adults.…”

“…Pada pemijahan ketiga, telur hasil pemijahan tidak dilepaskan karena perbaikan cara pemeliharaan dengan memisahkan induk betina sehingga dapat dierami dari awal peletakan oleh induk betian sampai matang (Gambar 1). Smith & Ritar (2005) menguatkan hasil ini bahwa gangguan fisik pada induk betina mengganggu performa reproduksi bahkan sampai larva yang dihasilkan.…”
