Effect of Stillbirths on Dam Survival and Reproduction Performance in Holstein Dairy Cows

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of stillbirth on survival and reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows. Data were collected from 2 different regions of the US calving-ease scores (CES) were recorded by farm personnel on a scale of 1 (no problem) to 5 (extreme difficulty). Stillbirths were recorded by farm personnel. The final analysis included 13,608 calvings of which 93.4% were live calves and 6.6% stillbirths. An increasing or decreasing trend in the incidence of stillbirth b… Show more

“…The trend in the incidence of stillbirth was almost parallel to the trend of abnormal parturition over years, as the overall frequency of stillbirth increased from 6.89% to 13.77% from 1989 to 2008. The incidence of stillbirth in dairy cows has consistently increased in recent decades in the world (Berglund et al, 2003;Hansen et al, 2004;Bicalho et al, 2007;Cole et al, 2007). These findings are also in line with the reports indicating gradual decline in dairy cow fertility during the last decades.…”

“…The decline in milk yield was found more pronounced (p<0.01) in animals which have undergone abnormal parturition (2723.75± 67.88 kg) in comparison to T h e dry period was also found to be longer in abnormally calved animals (127.18±4.63 days) than normal animals (117.75±2.39 days). Abnormal parturition especially dystocia and stillbirth has been implicated for reduced lactation performance, number of calves, conception rate, and longevity, and in increased risk of developing metritis and retained placenta (Berglund et al, 2003;Maizon et al, 2004;Bicalho et al, 2007 andAtashi et al, 2012). Lower milk production and impaired reproductive performance further lead to higher culling rates in farm which in turn results in economic losses.…”

“…The H 3 LM and H 3 GB crossbreeds demonstrated a similar gestation length, although the latter group had more uneventful calvings. Stillbirths have a severe impact on dairy profitability (Bicalho et al, 2007). According to previous studies, the cause of stillbirth is likely to be multifactorial, although calving difficulty and stillbirth are highly correlated.…”

“…Dystocia and perinatal mortality are quantitative traits that significantly impact animal productivity and welfare (Bicalho et al, 2007;Bicalho et al, 2008;Olsen et al, 2010;Seidenspinner et al, 2011) and are common phenomena in both dairy and beef cattle (Hickey et al, 2007;Mee et al, 2011). The contribution of dystocia and perinatal mortality to profit in cattle production systems is reflected by their inclusion in many national breeding programs.…”
