Effect of Storage Conditions and Storage Periods on Seed Germination in Eleven Populations ofSwertia chirayita: A Critically Endangered Medicinal Herb in Himalaya

Abstract: Effect of different storage conditions (room temperature, 4°C, and −15°C) and different storage periods over 24 months on seed germination in Swertia chirayita collected from different altitudes in Sikkim Himalaya was determined. Multivariate ANOVA revealed significant (P < 0.0001) effect of storage condition and storage period on seed germination and mean germination time. Seed germination percentage significantly (P < 0.01) varied between 87.78% (Sc5) and 100% (Sc2) during initial testing. Comparatively, hig… Show more

“…The plants were found to have very low germination of this plant in natural conditions [3] [19], but reported 70% germination under good storage in warm polyhouse condition [20]. We also found good germination in Lava in polyhouse condition (Figure 1(a)).…”

“…Seed deterioration starts immediately after harvest and therefore, post-harvest handling of rice seed plays a key role in the maintenance of seed quality (Vange et al, 2016). It is important to preserve the genetic integrity of seeds during storage to retain high seed quality (Pradhan & Badola, 2012). Factors that affect the quality of seed during storage include drying temperature, moisture content, storage temperature, oxygen supply, pest and diseases, packaging material and duration of storage (Muangkaeo et al, 2005;Chattah et al, 2012;Jyoti & Malik, 2013).…”

Storage temperature and moisture content are the most crucial (Pradhan & Badola, 2012). The optimum moisture content for storing rice seed is between 12-14% (Whitehouse et al, 2015).…”
