Effect of time and storing conditions on iron forms in ferrous gluconate and Ascofer®

Abstract: Antianemic medicament Ascofer ® and ferrous gluconate, its basic iron bearing ingredient, were studied with the use of Mössbauer spectroscopy. Room temperature spectra gave a clear evidence that two phases of iron were present viz. ferrous (Fe 2+ ) as a major one with a contribution of ~85 ±5 %, and ferric (Fe 3+ ) whose contribution was found to be ∼15±5 %. However, the actual values of the contributions of the two kind of the iron ions in Ascofer ® depend on sample's age: the abundance of Fe 2+ ions increase… Show more

“…It can be seen that the former has a shoulder on its left side a feature that indicates a presence of the Fe 2+ ions experiencing a slightly weaker crystal field. The existence of such ions was also reported previously [6][7][8]10]. It should be also noticed that the width of the peak representing the minor iron phase is larger than the one associated with the major phase.…”

“…As reported elsewhere [13], one cannot uniquely identify the ferric ions as their IS and QS values overlap with those of Fe 2+ (LS). In these circumstances, as remarked elsewhere [10], the minor iron phase seen in the Mӧssbauer spectra and commonly regarded as the ferric one may be , in fact, a ferrous low-spin phase. To shed more light on the issue, the present study aimed at determination of the Debye temperature, D, of both forms of iron was undertaken.…”

“…In this case it may be good to compare the effectiveness of medicaments from different manufacturers which ironcontaining compounds have some differences in the iron electronic structure. A comparison of the quality of two Mössbauer spectra of medicament Ascofer Ò (Espefa, Poland) containing ferrous gluconate and measured at room temperature using spectrometer with a low velocity resolution (128 channels) in [64] and precision high velocity resolution spectrometer (4096 channels) used in this work (see [63]) is shown in Fig. 14.…”
