Effectiveness of Bone Marrow–Derived Platelet-Rich Fibrin on Rotator Cuff Healing in a Rabbit Degenerative Model

Abstract: Background: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate. Although peripheral blood–derived PRF (P-PRF) is commonly applied in biological augmentation, there is no report about the therapeutic effect of bone marrow–derived PRF (BM-PRF) for degenerative rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Purpose/Hypothesis: To examine the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), P-PRF, and BM-PRF during rotator cuff repair (RCR) in degenerative RCTs in rabbits. We hypothesized that BM-PRF would accelerate the bo… Show more

“…In addition, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), as a concentrated product of PRP, has also been used in the study of promoting tendon-bone healing. A recent study by (Uno et al, 2022) found that PRF significantly enhanced tendon-bone continuity in the RCT model, and at the same time achieved better tendon-bone maturation. Consequently, PRP and its concentrate have great potential to promote tendon-bone healing.…”

“…The biomaterials used in these methods include both natural and synthetic. Natural biomaterials include polysaccharides (alginate [ 111 , 112 ], chitosan [ 113 , 114 ], cellulose [ 115 ] and hyaluronic acid [ 116 118 ]) and protein (collagen [ 119 121 ], gelatin [ 122 , 123 ] and fibrin [ 124 127 ] biomaterials. Synthetic biomaterials include poly lactic acid (PLA) [ 120 , 128 ], Polycaprolactone (PCL) [ 129 131 ], Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) [ 132 ] and poly(urethanes) [ 133 ].…”

“…At present, the main cytokines commonly used to promote tendon-bone healing include BMP-2, acidic FGF (aFGF), milk fat globulin E8 (MFG-E8), secreted leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI), etc ( Table 4 ). In addition, PRP, as a source of abundant cytokines, has also been applied in the study of promoting tendon-bone healing ( Zhang et al, 2019 ; Uno et al, 2022 ).…”

In addition, PRP, as a source of abundant cytokines, has also been applied in the study of promoting tendon-bone healing (Zhang et al, 2019;Uno et al, 2022). BMP-2 is a widely distributed glycoprotein in bone matrix, and its main function is to promote osteoblast differentiation and induce bone formation (Durham et al, 2018).…”
