Effectiveness of clove oil as anesthesia of Sergeant Major Abudefduf vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825)

Abstract: The increasing demand for live ornamental fish for export needs triggers fishermen to start looking for alternative fishing techniques that are more effective and efficient. The technique commonly used is the anesthetic technique using potassium cyanide. The use of cyanide has been banned by the government because of the many impacts it has caused such as the degradation of coral reef ecosystems, high non-target fish mortality and pollution of coastal areas. “…This is due to the increasing doses of anesthetics absorbed into the respiratory tissue so that the nervous system does not function more quickly (Cahyono & Mulyani, 2012). Fish that enter the fainting stage are indicated by the fish stopping swimming, the operculum slowing down, and falling to the bottom (Amris, Rahim, & Yaqin , 2020). This is due to the active ingredients of clove extract entering the fish body through the gills and muscle tissue (Öğretmen, Gölbasi, & Kutluyer, 2016).…”

“…Antifungal activity of clove oil, betel oil, eucalyptus oil, citronella oil, and peppermint has been shown to inhibit the activity of the fungi Penicillium sp., Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus versicolor [7]. Several studies have been conducted on the use of clove oil, such as its antibacterial and antifungal properties in food packaging [8], improvement of fish feed efficiency [9], anesthetic for ornamental fish [10], and as antibacterial agent in toothpaste [11]. However, there are still few studies that utilize clove oil as a coating material for particleboard, such as clove oil as surface treatment for rubberwood particleboard [12], and clove oil as historic wood preservative [13].…”
