A survey for nematode infection in German cockroaches captured in restaurants in various areas of Japan as well as the laboratory-bred colony was carried out. The nematodes were then identified morphologically and molecularly. Of the 320 German cockroaches collected at 79 restaurants in 26 prefectures in Japan, 66.6% (213/320) were found to be parasitized by a single species of pinworm in the hindgut. The mean number of pinworms per cockroach was less than 1.6. Of the three laboratory-bred lines of cockroaches examined, 2 lines (NIID and NK) were found to be infected with a single species of nematode. The prevalence was 93.0% (40/43) and 84.8% (39/46), respectively. The other laboratory line (WAT) was found to be free of the nematode infection. The nematode detected in this study was identified as Blatticola blattae. This is the first report of B. blattae infection in German cockroaches in Japan. Our study showed that B. blattae is distributed all over Japan together with its host Blattella germanica. An experimental infection with B. blattae in nematode-free cockroach by contaminating the rearing environment with infected-cockroach feces showed that once the environment of the cockroach is contaminated with B. blattae eggs, the pinworm infection could spread easily.

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is often infected with the pinworm, Blatticola blattae. To investigate the effect of pinworm infection on cockroach survival, we artificially manipulated the pinworm infection status of two lines of German cockroaches kept in the laboratory and compared survival rates in starvation. Of the two lines of German cockroaches WATn and NIIDp bred in the laboratory, the WATn line was not infected with pinworm, and the NIIDp line was naturally infected with pinworm B. blattae. The WATp line was created by artificially infecting the pinworm B. blattae with this WATn line. The NIIDn line was created by treating the NIIDp line with anthelmintic drugs. The 50% survival days of uninfected WATn line of starving cockroaches was 8 days, and infected WATp line of starving cockroaches was 13 days. The 50% survival days of naturally infected NIIDp line of starving cockroaches was 6 days, and that of anthelmintic-treated NIIDn line of cockroaches was 4 days. The survival days were significantly longer in pinworm-infected cockroaches than uninfected or anthelmintic-treated cockroaches. These results suggest that pinworm infection enhances the survival of cockroaches under starving conditions.

Abstract. El-Ghwas DE, Al-Nasser AS, Al-Sheikhy AA. 2021. Short Communication: Bacillus endolithicus and Bacillus paramycoides: New Isolates from housefly Musca domestica in Saudi Arabia. Biodiversitas 22: 4209-4214. Housefly Musca domestica Linnaeus is a common insect widely distributed all over the world. It is one of the domestic insects found associated with humans and animals. The present study investigated the bacterial diversity associated with Musca domestica samples collected from different places such as food courts and trash cans near fast-food restaurants in Makkah Province from October 2019 to December 2019. Eighteen pure isolates of bacterial strains were isolated and identified by Gram staining. Most of the bacterial isolates were Gram-positive except for two species, which were Gram-negative. The VITEK system was used to identify randomly isolate no. 5, 7, 17, 18, and 29. The results revealed that they belonged to the genus Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Micrococcus sp. respectively. Due to the most isolated strains were Bacillus sp., so 16S RNA was used to genetically identify novel isolated strains 5 and 7. Isolate no. 5 showed the highest similarity (99 %) with Bacillus endolithicus, and isolate no. 7 showed the highest similarity (99 %) with Bacillus paramycoides. This is the first record of Bacillus endolithicus and Bacillus paramycoides to be isolated from the house fly Musca domestica L.
