Effects of Bifocal versus Trifocal Diffractive Intraocular Lens Implantation on Visual Quality after Cataract Surgery

Abstract: Purpose To compare the effects of bifocal versus trifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) implantation on visual quality after phacoemulsification in patients with cataracts. Methods Eighty-eight eyes from 63 patients were analyzed. Trifocal (AT LISA tri 839MP), bifocal (AcrySof IQ ReSTOR) and bifocal (Tecnis MF ZLB00) IOLs were implanted into 53, 18, and 17 eyes, respectively. Uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity, refractive errors, contrast sen… Show more

“…The photopic contrast sensitivity values, however, were better with the Liberty lens. The latter result is in agreement with the findings of other investigations, including studies reporting lower contrast sensitivity values for the AT LISA tri than we found and a reduction at high spatial frequencies (12 and 18 cpd) [22,26,28]. The contrast sensitivity curves for the Liberty IOL in our patients match those presented in other studies of this lens [23,25].…”

“…Visual outcomes reflect the refractive results. Both IOLs provided sharp vision at multiple distances (far, intermediate, near), and the uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuities are in good agreement with previously published data for these lenses [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. Nevertheless, a remarkably higher proportion of eyes achieved good functional monocular vision at multiple distances with the Liberty lens compared to the plate-haptic AT LISA tri.…”

“…However, a conclusive finding was not generated due to several limitations such as inclusion of studies with different designs and language restriction. A recent retrospective study also revealed no significant difference between trifocal and bifocal IOLs in the uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near VA ( 21 ). Although Cruz and colleagues have published a Cochrane protocol of trifocal IOLs vs. bifocal IOLs after cataract extraction ( 26 ), and the full-text review has also been reported on June 18, 2020; ( 27 ) the reference of this review has been discounted due to the following limitations: (a) eligible patients were limited to ≥30 years with presbyopia; (b) insufficient eligible studies were included ( 23 ), and (c) pilot study which has duplicate data with subsequent formal study was considered ( 28 ).…”

“…리를 포함한 모든 스펙트럼에서 시력을 향상시키며 기존 이중초 점인공수정체에 비하여 높은 수준의 시력향상과 환자 만족도를 나타낸다는 연구가 발표되고 있다 [3][4][5][6][7][8] 59% of the participants stated that they were satisfied overall. Note that intermediate and near vision satisfaction levels are greater than or equal to the average (76% and 82%, respectively).…”
