Effects of Cadmium and Phenol on Motility and Ultrastructure of Sea Urchin and Mussel Spermatozoa

Abstract: Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was used to study the effects of Cd(II) and phenol on sperm motility of sea urchin and mussel. In parallel, ultrastructural changes of sperm induced by these two toxicants were also investigated and related to motility impairment. Spermatozoa of sea urchin were more sensitive than mussel spermatozoa to both toxicants. Sea urchin sperm motility showed a good dose-response relationship to Cd(II) levels as well as exposure time. Exposure to the two toxicants changed the siz… Show more

“…Moreover, LM fish's spermatozoa revealed the presence of few numbers and large sized mitochondria in front of the proximal centriole toward the lateral aspects of the nucleus. The enlarged size of the mitochondria appeared to be a considerable hypertrophy and a sign of acclimatization of fish in these samples rather than RN [48,49]. The bilateral fins of the spermatozoa that formed by the plasma membrane extended from the flagellum is very important for perfect motility and exhibits higher fertilization capacity [40].…”

“…The characteristics of sperm, collected after mollusk sperm shedding, were estimated in a few species: mussel (Mytilus edulis, Everett et al 2004;Jha et al 2007), Pacific oyster (Cosson et al 2008a;Suquet et al 2012) and sea urchin (Anthocidaris crassispina; Au et al 2000). Sperm fertilisation capacity of two Caribbean scallops (Argopecten nucleus and Nodipecten nodosus) was not influenced by stimulation technique, including temperature shock and serotonin or prostaglandin injection (Velasco et al 2007).…”
