Effects of Chaihu-Guizhi-Ganji on the Levels of Monoamines and Their Related Substances, and Acetylcholine in Discrete Brain Regions of Mice

Abstract: The effects of the extract powder (CggT) from Chaihu-Guizhi-Ganjiang-Tang (Saiko-keishi-kankyo-to, in Japanese) on the monoamines and their related substances and the acetylcholine in mouse brain were examined. 1) A single administration of CggT significantly increased the levels of HVA and 5-HIAA in the cerebral cortex, hypothalamus, corpus striatum and hippocampus at 75 mg/kg, and those in the hypothalamus, corpus striatum and hippocampus at 750 mg/kg. 2) The repeated administration of CggT significantly inc… Show more

“…Pharmacological studies revealed the mechanisms of SKK. Administration of SKK for 14 days significantly increased serotonin in the hippocampus and the corpus striatum, and norepinephrine in the hippocampus (Itoh et al, 1996). SKK also regulates the levels of plasma interleukin-6 and the concentration of soluble interleukin-6 receptors, and improves the depressed mood of climacteric women with insomnia (Ushiroyama et al, 2005).…”

“…A single or repeated dose of Chaihu-Guizhi-Ganjiang-Tang, an herbal compound containing BU, was reported to increase the levels of homovanillic acid (a dopamine metabolite), 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (a serotonin metabolite), and serotonin in discrete brain regions of mice (Itoh et al, 1996). The aqueous extract of BU is reported to bind dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors (Liao et al, 1995).…”

“…5HT then activates postsynaptic 5HT1A receptors that inhibit the process of hippocampal long-term potentiation [7]. The repeated administration of SKK significantly increases the 5HT level in the hippocampus and the corpus striatum and of NE and 5HT in the hippocampus [8]. SKK also regulates plasma interleukin-6 and soluble interleukin-6 receptor concentrations and improves depressed mood in climacteric women with insomnia [9].…”
