Effects of CSN3 and LGB gene polymorphisms on production traits in beef cattle

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to estimate the allele and genotype frequencies of the CSN3/HinfI and LGB/HaeIII gene polymorphisms in beef cattle belonging to different genetic groups, and to determine the effects of these polymorphisms on growth and carcass traits in these animals, which are submitted to an intensive production model. Genotyping was performed on 79 Nelore, 30 Canchim (5/8 Charolais + 3/8 Zebu) and 275 crossbred cattle originating from the crosses of Simmental (n = 30) and Angus (n = 2… Show more

“…In contrast to the previously mentioned results, the authors reported that the AA genotype of K-CN gene were characterized by the highest milk, fat and protein yield, while the lowest fat and protein contents were observed in milk of cows with the BB genotype. This association between AA genotype with higher milk production agreed with the results of Curi et al [13].…”

“…However, Biase et al 2005 indicate that a kappa-casein polymorphism did not influence weight-gain in Brazilian Nellore herds, although they found differences in the frequency of the A and B alleles, with the A allele observed most frequently in this beef breed. Similar results were reported by Curi et al 2005 in Nellore, Canchim and a crossbreed (Simmental x Nellore, Angus x Nellore) cattle. Here, we include animals from the Charolais breed, and we found frequencies similar to those reported by Jann et al (2004).…”

“…Alison Van Eenennaam and Medrano (1991) compared κ-casein AA and BB genotypes and showed that the BB genotype showed first lactational yields increased by 296 kg with regard to AA. In contrast, Gonyon et al (1987) and Curi et al (2005) reported that the κ-casein genotype AA was associated with higher milk production than BB, with the heterozygous AB being intermediate, whereas Ng-Kwai-Hang et al (1986) and S Kim, M.Sc. Thesis, McGill University, Montreal, QC, 1994) showed that κ-casein AB animals were better milk producers than either of the homozygous animals, in Ayrshire, Holstein, Jersey, brown Swiss, Canadienne and Guernsey cattle breeds.…”
