Effects of Dexamethasone on the Morphometry and Biometry of Immune Organs of Broiler Chicken

Abstract: The study was conducted to examine the histological changes i.e. morphology and biometry of immune organs (thymus, spleen and bursa cloacalis or «Fabricius») of broilers in response to dietary dexamethasone (DEX). The day old chicks were obtained from the commercial hatchery and randomly divided into two groups i.e. control and experimental or treated group. The control group was reared on commercial broiler ration and the experimental group (n=25) was maintained on commercial broiler ration with corticosteroi… Show more

“…It can reduce feed intake and feed efficiency (Gao et al 2010), increase the catabolism of structural proteins (Puvadolpirod and Thaxton 2000b) and cause a decrease in liver weight and abdominal fat deposition . Stress results in an atrophy of the lymphoid glands like thymus and bursa of fabricius in birds (Puvadolpirod and Thaxton 2000a;Sultana et al 2020). Following lymphopenia and an increase in heterophil levels in the bloodstream, then, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (H: L) usually increases in stressed birds (Aengwanich 2007).…”

“…The purchased feed was free from any kind of antibiotic, growth promoter or other drug that may alter the real outcomes. Size of the pellets and composition ( Sultana et al, 2020b ) of the pre- starter, starter and finisher feed was chosen to fulfill the nutritional requirements at different ages. Dietary glucocorticoid (Dexamethasone, BP 0.5 mg, Opsonin Ltd.) was supplied to the treated groups at the rate of 3 mg/kg (T1), 5 mg/kg (T2), and 7 mg/kg (T3).…”

“…For histological investigation, the tissue samples were processed and stained (Hematoxylin and Eosin; H & E) according to the protocol described by Sultana et al, 2020 . All stained tissue sections were examined by single person to avoid individual variation and analyzed blindly to avoid any biasness.…”

“…The physiological changes in broiler chickens in response to the dietary DEX supplementation have been described by Afrose et al (2018). The effects of the dietary DEX on immune organs (Sultana et al 2020a) and the liver of broiler chickens (Sultana et al 2020b) have also been studied. However, very little information is available regarding the effects of exogenous dietary GC on the histomorphology and morphometry of broiler testes.…”
