Effects of Helium-Neon Laser on Levels of Stress Protein and Arthritic Histopathology in Experimental Osteoarthritis

Abstract: Helium-neon (632 nm) low-power laser can enhance SP production in arthritic chondrocytes. The extragenic production of SP is well correlated with the therapeutic effect of low-power laser in preserving chondrocytes and the repair of arthritic cartilage in rats.

“…A mixture of 10 μl of papain and 10 μl of cysteine solution was injected into the left knee of each rat three times; on the first, fourth, and seventh days of study. The arthritis model was inducted on the ninth day after the first injection while the right knee was taken as a normal control (Lin et al 2004). …”

“…Laser biostimulation was not toxic to chondrocytes as demonstrated by the live-dead assay as well as the finding that the DNA content was comparable between treated and untreated tissues. The doses used in this study were similar to those used in previous studies which indicated that 1-5 J/cm 2 was effective for inducing positive effects in chondrocytes [44] as well as other cell types [29]. However, in these studies either different experimental conditions or types of lasers were utilized than in the current study, thus limiting the comparisons that can be made between the various investigations [23,[44][45][46][47].…”

“…Dessa forma, o laser melhora as características histopatológicas da cartilagem (18,19) , o que é de extrema importância em casos de sinovite, visto que de, acordo com Haapala et al (20) , o componente inflamatório é importante na patogênese da lesão da cartilagem articular.…”
