Effects of inoculation method and size of Rhizobium meliloti population in the soil on nodulation of alfalfa

Abstract: par la souche inoculde. L'inoculant granulaire placd avec la semence ou sous la ligne de semis a donn6 des nodosit6s plus lourdes, plus nombreuses et occup6es dans une plus forte proportion par la souche

“…These methods are often better and never worse than conventional seed inoculation for initiating nodulation and N2 fixation (e.g. Brockwell et al, 1980;Chamber, 1983;Danso et al, 1990a;Hale, 1981;Jensen, 1987;Muldoon et al, 1980;Rice and Olsen, 1992). Solid inoculant may be introduced into the seed bed through an insecticide attachment to the seed drill.…”

“…However, inoculation with strain NRG-34 resulted in only 5.6% occupancy by indigenous populations of NRG-185. In a previous study, nodule occupancy by the inoculant rhizobia of 46.5% in the establishment year and 28.2% the following June significantly increased the biomass of alfalfa grown on a similar soil type (Rice and Olsen, 1992). In this study, strain NRG-34 had 80.6% occupancy in the establishment year which decreased to 60.4% in the second year, whereas strain NRG-185 decreased from 50.7% to 25.0%.…”

“…The value of inoculating alfalfa seed has been demonstrated before in the Peace River region of Alberta and British Columbia (13,14). Thompson and Stout (6) found no significant differences between seed-applied and coated inoculant in nodulation and DM yield of alfalfa.…”
