Effects of microperfusion in hepatic diffusion weighted imaging

Abstract: ObjectiveClinical hepatic diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) generally relies on mono-exponential diffusion. The aim was to demonstrate that mono-exponential diffusion in the liver is contaminated by microperfusion and that the bi-exponential model is required.MethodsNineteen fasting healthy volunteers were examined with DWI (seven b-values) using fat suppression and respiratory triggering (1.5 T). Five different regions in the liver were analysed regarding the mono-exponentially fitted apparent diffusion coeffi… Show more

“…The vector / i ¼ ðF i ; D i ; D Ã i Þ contains the IVIM parameters at each pixel (i ¼ 1:M) and p $ q represents the complete set of neighboring pixels within the ROI. By taking the negative logarithm of Equation [7], maximization of the posterior distribution is converted into the minimization of an energy functional of the form:…”

“…where the constant term E 0 accounts for the proportionality in Equation [7] and plays no part in the subsequent optimization. Note that the spatial homogeneity term (pairwise energy) has been defined in Equation [8] as the vector product between a scaling vector W and the vector of absolute differences in parameter values between neighboring pixels (multiplied by a scalar smoothing factor a).…”
