To improve the mechanical properties of biodegradable bioplastic poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH), a filler made up of silica particles (SiO 2 ) is mixed with PHBH; however, SiO 2 shows low compatibility with PHBH. Herein, to enhance the interfacial adhesion of SiO 2 and PHBH, the PHBH-grafted SiO 2 (SiO 2 −PHBH) fillers were prepared from propargyl-terminated PHBH and azide-modified SiO 2 by click chemistry. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that SiO 2 −PHBH fillers dispersed uniformly in PHBH. In contrast, the SiO 2 fillers aggregated in PHBH. Thermal analysis of the PHBH/SiO 2 −PHBH composite films revealed that the glass transition temperature shifted to a high temperature. Young's modulus and yield stress of the PHBH/SiO 2 −PHBH composite films were increased with increasing concentration of SiO 2 −PHBH. Conversely, PHBH/SiO 2 composite films showed only a small increase in the elastic modulus and a decrease in the yield stress. These results confirmed that SiO 2 −PHBH improves the mechanical properties of PHBH, and it is expected to expand the industrial applications of PHBH.

Sustainable antibacterial poly(lactide) (PLA) nanocomposites have attracted plenty of attention due to their potential application in biomedical and packaging fields. However, the preparation of nonleaching antibacterial PLA nanocomposites with high crystallinity is still a challenge due to their poor compatibility and the low crystallization rate of PLA. An effective and facile way by compounding poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) with poly(l-lactide) (PLLA)-grafted ZnO that was synthesized via in situ aminolysis reaction at the surface of ZnO was designed to simultaneously overcome these limitations. During solution mixing, the PDLA matrix and the grafted PLLA chains tend to orient side by side at the PDLA/ZnO interface and finally cocrystallize into stereocomplex (sc) crystallites. The interfacial stereocomplexation not only serves as a nucleator to increase the crystallization rate of the matrix but also effectively prevents ZnO from leaching out of the polymer matrix. Meanwhile, the nanocomposites have excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, it may provide an effective route to prepare advanced PLA-based materials with a fast crystallization rate, excellent biocompatibility, and nonleaching antibacterial property in this work, thus broadening the application range of PLA in biomedical applications.

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) has potential to be used as a reinforcement in polymeric nanocomposites because of their inherent biodegradability, universal accessibility, and superior mechanical properties. The most crucial challenge faced in the nanocomposite production is dispersing the nanoparticles effectively in the polymer matrix, so that the exceptional mechanical properties of the nanoparticles can be transferred to the macroscale properties to the bulk nanocomposites. In this research, a safe, effective and ecofriendly modification was used to functionalize the surface hydroxyl groups of CNC via silane treatment. These modified CNCs were used as reinforcements to prepare poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)/CNC nanocomposites. The composites were prepared using solvent casting method. The composite properties were evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). The SEM micrographs demonstrated that the composites incorporated with silane treated CNCs showed improvement in the dispersion behavior of the nanoparticles in the matrix. Oxidative combustion of the composites containing silane treated CNCs promoted char formation and enhanced thermal stability. The composites containing (1:1) silane treated CNCs exhibited the better crystallization ability, highest storage modulus, and lowest tan d value compared to the other silane treated systems indicating improved dispersion of CNC. The polysiloxane network provided an efficient surface covering of the CNC molecules, imparting reduced polar surface characteristics and enhancing the overall mechanical properties of the composites.
