Effects of Paclitaxel in Combination with Ionizing Radiation on Angiogenesis in the Chick Embryo Chorioallantoic Membrane

Abstract: These data confirm that the CAM system can be conveniently and properly used for radiobiological studies and indicate that paclitaxel in combination with ionizing radiation does not inhibit further angiogenesis in the system used.

“…While the effect of a limited number of drugs in combination with IR has been studied on the CAM , we now demonstrate that the efficacy of combining IR with sunitinib is dependent on the schedule that is used. In agreement with others, we show that IR alone reduces angiogenesis and that this recovers within 96 h . Interestingly, our data suggest that the effect of IR on the vasculature is also transient when IR is followed by sunitinib treatment, as this combination treatment schedule was as effective as sunitinib alone.…”

“…In 2001 Karnabatidis and colleagues evaluated the effect of ionizing radiation on the angiogenesis process in the CAM model [261]. A study on the effects of combining ionizing radiation with drug treatment did not reveal any anti-angiogenic effect of the drug, but further confirmed the notion that the CAM is a convenient model for radiobiological studies [262].…”

“…Combined effects of paclitaxel and single or fractionated doses of ionizing radiation during angiogenesis were also evaluated [22]. X-rays suppression of angiogenesis includes anti-proliferative action and induction of nitric oxide (NO) which also inhibits vascular growth [158].…”
