Effects of rotating night shifts: literature review

Abstract: The literature reinforces concerns about the adverse relationship between fatigue and performance in the workplace. Optimal standards for patient care may be difficult to achieve for more mature nurses, who may suffer from sleep deprivation and health problems associated with rotational night work and disrupted physiological rhythms.

“…Wisetborisut et al (2014) found that the prevalence of burnout in shift workers was 25% compared with 15% in non-shift workers, and having more sleeping hours per day was associated with a lower odds of burnout among shift workers [37]. Nurses working shifts, including night shifts, are subject to a cumulative sleep debt, a decreased quantity and quality of sleep, and continuous sleep deprivation [38]. They are vulnerable to work related fatigue and, consequently, experience excessive daytime sleepiness [39].…”

“…In order to deal with the increasing number of scan operations, some hospitals may consider extending the hours in which scans can be conducted or revising the system of shifts, such as conducting scans at night. However, it is reported that extending working hours and providing more services at night entails safety issues [16,17]. Thus, it is important to focus medical resources within a limited time and ensure efficient and safe provision.…”

“…According to the study by Mueck et al (2005), which examined the effects of working shifts, rotational shifts were found to cause psychological and physiological problems in nurses, especially in those aged above 40 years (25). Drowsiness and poor attention in nurses during work shifts could have a negative impact on the performance of these professionals and patient outcomes.…”

“…Drowsiness and poor attention in nurses during work shifts could have a negative impact on the performance of these professionals and patient outcomes. Considering the fact that sleep problems among nurses are commonly associated with their work shifts, nurses engaged in night shifts need to spend a few hours sleeping during the day in order to ensure the compensation of inadequate sleep (25).…”
