Effects of selenium on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Selenium (Se) supply (0,3,6,12,24 ) increased MDA content by 28%, decreased net photosynthetic rate and carboxylation efficiency by 34% and 39%, respectively. The Se concentration in the roots, stems, and leaves of the tobacco plants significantly increased with increasing Se application. A linear correlation (R = 0.95, P < 0.01) was observed between Se level and tobacco plant tissue Se concentration. This correlation indicated that the tobacco plan… Show more

“…This finding is in agreement with our results on tatsoi (both carotenoids) at both Se doses, and on coriander (β-carotene) and both basil cultivars (lutein) at the dose of 8 µM Se (Figure 3A,B). Indeed, Se applications enhance the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments in plants, triggering the repair of chloroplasts damaged by abiotic stress and ROS [55,74,75]. However, an opposite effect was found in rice sprouts by D'Amato et al [49], in which both selenite and selenate applications entailed a reduction in the total carotenoid content.…”

“…Microscopic images representing the data are shown in Fig GH. Microscopic analysis of stomatal parameters is much less examined compared to stomatal conductance, which is determined by stomatal density and the stomatal size. Se treatments caused increased stomatal conductance in tobacco or in alfalfa (Jiang et al, 2015;Hajiboland et al, 2015). In other plants, like cucumber or maize, treatments with Se forms resulted in decreased stomatal conductance (Haghighi et al, 2016;Jiang et al, 2017) suggesting that the effect of Se forms on stomatal parameters depends on the examined species.…”
