Effects of Single or Repeated Immobilization on Release of Norepinephrine and Its Metabolites in the Central Nucleus of the Amygdala in Conscious Rats

Abstract: The release of norepinephrine (NE) and its metabolites in the central nucleus of the amygdala was measured using in vivo microdialysis during immobilization (IMMO) stress in conscious rats. Animals underwent 2-hour periods of IMMO either once or daily for 7 days. Extracellular fluid concentrations of NE, dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG), methoxyhydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), and the dopamine metabolite dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were measured before, during, and after IMMO. Microdialysate levels of NE and DHP… Show more

“…A number of studies indicate that exposure to stressful stimuli activates NE terminals in the AMG [4]. For example, some experiments have demonstrated that immobilization increases synthesis, release, and metabolism of NE in the AMG in conscious rats [41,42]. The mechanism by which NE in the AMG activates the HPA axis following photic stimulation is not entirely clear.…”

“…The ascending noradrenergic system is activated by stress (Abercrombie and Jacobs 1987;Morilak et al 1987;Pacak et al 1993), and it has been demonstrated that stress-induced activation of the noradrenergic input to BSTL can facilitate both behavioral reactivity and activation of the HPA axis in response to stress (Cecchi et al 2001; Delfs et al 2000;Shaham et al 2000). Recent studies have suggested a mutually antagonistic interaction between galanin and norepinephrine acting at ␣ 2 adrenergic receptors (DiazCabiale et al 2000a,b).…”

“…In the present study, we sought to characterize age-associated changes in central and peripheral catecholaminergic activity of young and old male 344/N Fischer rats, a well characterized strain for aging studies, under basal conditions and during acute IMMO, a stressor known to activate both catecholaminergic systems and the HPA axis (20,21 …”
