Effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation on Patients with Stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Prospective, Single-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study

Abstract: Acu-TENS over acupoints of bilateral EX-B-1 (Dingchuan), BL-13 (Feishu), BL-23 (Shenshu), and ST-36 (Zusanli) improved FEV(1)% predicted and reduced DVAS and CAT scores on patients with stable COPD. This may be a novel treatment strategy in COPD.

“…Based on the above criteria, 5 articles were selected (Table 1). Two studies focused on (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Simulation on acupoints) Acu-TENS in COPD patients (Lau & Jones 2008;Liu et al 2015), one study focused on cognitive behavior therapy in COPD patients (Howard et al 2010), one study applied inspiratory muscle training in patients with thoracic malignancies (Liu et al 2015), and the remaining study was on using yoga in lung cancer survivors (Molassiotis et al 2015). This review focuses specifically on examining the influence of the following aspects of the study on intervention outcomes: study design, samples characteristics, intervention, and outcome and result of the intervention.…”

“…The interventions have similarity in two studies (Lau & Jones, 2008;Liu et al 2015), although some important differences can be noted. In Lau and Jones, the studied participants in the experimental group received 45 minutes of Acu-TENS at bilateral acupoints Ex-B1 (known as Ding Chuan in Traditional Chinese Medicine), located at 0.5 'cun' lateral to the spinous process of C7, where 1 cun is the distance between the medial creases of the interphalangeal joints of the person's middle finger.…”

“…The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of acupuncture as an adjunct therapy combined with Chinese herbal compounds in the treatment of COPD model rats and to explore the possible underlying mechanism. BL 13 (Feishu), BL 23 (Shenshu), and GV 14 (Dazhui), which are the most common acupuncture points used in clinical practice, were selected as the treatment points in this study based on TCM theory [44,47]. BL 13, BL 23, and GV 14 along with Bufei Yishen granules could improve shortness of breath and cough because of the nourishment of the lung and kidney in TCM theory.…”

“…Due to invasiveness and insertion of needles, traditional acupuncture can lead to complications such as subcutaneous hematomas and pneumothorax (16,17). Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) has been used as a safe and low-risk method since 1970 (18,19). The importance of nursing in medical care is indispensable and the nurses have to be screened continuously by monitoring systems for quality of sleep, and treated effectively in case of any problems.…”
