“…Given the importance of gelatinous zooplankton for global biogeochemistry and the direct impacts of blooms on ecosystem dynamics and human activities, examining the presence of viruses in ctenophores addresses an important knowledge gap. A great deal of previous research has examined the conditions that favor ctenophore growth and reproductive success (Purcell et al, 2001 ; Costello et al, 2012 ; McNamara et al, 2014 ; Robinson and Graham, 2014 ; Gambill et al, 2015 ; Jaspers et al, 2015 ); however, significantly less attention has been given to factors that contribute to bloom demise (Rathjen et al, 2012 ).
