Changes to engine geometry and specifications can produce better torque, power, volumetric efficiency and more. The technique known as wave tuning can lead to better engine torque and power. This paper focuses on increasing the engine torque by improving the exhaust fluid flow through the exhaust manifold. Phasing and intensity of the pressure waves in the exhaust manifold have significant effects on scavenging, valve overlapping and pumping losses. In this research, individual and combined effects of variable exhaust runner diameter and exhaust valve timing on the fluid flow from exhaust of the engine are studied using computer simulation. An engine simulation software, Ricardo Wave, is utilized in this research. The analysis is conducted on a 1-D model of a KTM 510 cc single cylinder, four-stroke Sl engine. The data gathered shows that varying only the exhaust pipe diameter continuously with speed yields an average of 4.23% improvement in torque from the original engine model. However, due to practical constraints, the diameter is limited to vary in three steps (36 mm, 45 mm and 60 mm). This has reduced the average improvement of torque to 3.78%. Varying the valve timing alone gains an average of 1.94% improvement in torque. Varying both the exhaust pipe diameter in three steps and the exhaust valve timing yields an average of 4.69% improvement in torque. This average is conducted over the engine speed ranges from 2000 to 11,000 rpm.

With the increasing complexity of engines and number of control parameters, optimal engine parameter sets need to be searched in the high dimensionality. Traditional calibration methods are too complicated, expensive and timeconsuming. The model-based optimisation is of critical importance for engine fuel efficiency improvement and exhaust emissions reduction. The optimisation highly depends on the model accuracy. In this paper, a multi-layer modelling method is proposed, which can be used to generate the engine model at arbitrary operating points in real time with high accuracy. An enhanced heuristic-algorithm-based optimiser is combined with the real-time modelling method to perform a parallel optimisation. The proposed modelling and optimisation strategy can achieve the minimal fuel consumption fast and accurately. This strategy has been successfully verified using experimental data sets.

The aim of this study was to verify the criteria for selecting pleated filter partitions used in passenger car engine filters. The paper presents the problem of optimizing pleated air filters in the dir ection of minimizing pressure drop, which is the source of engine energy losses. Two criteria for selection of a paper filter partition for specific operating conditions of the filter and the engine are presented: criterion of permissible separation speed and criterion of permissible pressure drop. The actual filtration area of 44 paper pleated filter elements used in passenger cars and the air stream flowing through the filter were determined, which made it possible to calculate separation speed. In 62% of the analyzed filter inserts, the calculated separation speeds are within the speed range recommended by the constructors, Fmax = 0,06-0,12 m/s. Exceeding permissible separation speed Fmax = 0,12 m/s was found mainly in supercharged engines. Negative effects of engine operation with an air filter with too small separation area are presented, in the form of increased pressure drop and energy loss of the engine as well as shorter car mileage to reach permissible pressure drop.
