Effects of various levels of rosemary and oregano volatile oil mixture on oxidative stress parameters in quails

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the possible effects of various levels of rosemary and oregano volatile oil mixture dietary supplementation on oxidative status parameters in the blood and various organs of quails. A total of 880 one-day-old Pharaoh quails (Coturnix coturnix Pharaoh) including both males and females, were divided into four groups containing 220 quails and treated as follows: a control group with 0 mg volatile oil (VO)/kg of diet; group I, with 100 mg/kg rosemary VO (RVO) plus 100 mg/kg o… Show more

“…Hu et al ., (2008) reported that serum MDA levels were decreased in test rats those fed by diets with hemp seed oil at the end of 90-day trial period compared with control groups of contained soybean oil and the normal diet. Also, it is reported that extract of cinnamon ( Faix et al ., 2009 ; Ciftci et al ., 2010 ), rosemary ( Yesilbag et al ., 2011 ), oregano ( Botsoglou et al ., 2002 ) decreased MDA levels in broilers and quails ( Bulbul et al ., 2012 ).…”

“…For example, rosemary essential oil and extract have been shown to destroy and prevent free radicals [14,15]. Rosemary is also capable of preventing lipid peroxidation, a destructive process that is caused by oxidative stress [7,16]. In addition to reducing the amount of reactive species in the body, rosemary has been found to increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes [17].…”

“…Food safety in terms of contamination and spoilage by microorganisms is a big issue and has always been a concern to consumers and food industries. In order to improve food safety, synthetic additives and preservatives which have harmful effects to human body (Bulbul, Bulbul, Biricik, Yesilbag, & Gezen, 2012) have been used. The limited storage life of foods and their association in foodborne disease outbreaks has resulted in commercial pressures to use synthetic chemicals as preservatives.…”
