Efficacy and Patient-Reported Outcomes of a New Mometasone Cream Treating Atopic Eczema

Abstract: This double-blind controlled phase II study was conducted to compare a newly developed formulation of mometasone furoate with a water content of 33% (Monovo® Cream) and with a smooth consistency versus the commercially available fatty cream of mometasone furoate (Ecural® Fettcreme) in terms of efficacy, cosmetic properties, and patients’ acceptance. In 20 patients with mild to moderate atopic eczema, the preparations were tested intraindividually in a randomized mode and in two comparable lesion areas. Both pr… Show more

“…In further studies it was shown that a regimen of mometasone furoate 0.1% cream applied 2 or 3 days/week for up to 36 weeks, and 2 days/week for 26 weeks was prophylactic in both adults with eczema35 and children with atopic dermatitis 36. Recently, new cream formulations of mometasone furoate have become available, which have been shown to be bioequivalent to the older preparations 7, 37, 38, 39…”

“…A total of 12 trials [112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122] were reported from 2000 onwards, with two trials reported together in one report. 113 Ten of these trials compared novel topical corticosteroids with standard topical corticosteroids and one trial 118 compared a topical corticosteroid with and without the addition of a penetration-enhancing drug.…”

“…This trial report was very short and there were very few details provided about the trial. Nine of these trials [112][113][114][115][116][117]122 compared treatments exclusively in children and three trials [118][119][120] did not report the age of the participants. Six of the trials 113,[116][117][118]121 had > 100 participants and six 112,114,115,119,120,122 had ≤ 50 participants.…”

“…Already available, a new MF light cream with 33% of water content on the base of an oil in water (O/W) formulation has been created to overwhelm classical MF formulations [32]. Studies have assessed similar bioavailability, efficacy and tolerability compared to the previous MF cream although with the enhanced cosmetic properties of a lighter cream [32,33]. Concurrently, an innovative MF non-alcoholic emulsion with 36% water content has been developed to provide emollient properties and avoid the risk of skin irritation and dryness derived from the use of alcohol-containing solutions.…”
