Efficacy and safety of Shenkang injection in the treatment of chronic renal failure

Abstract: Background: Chronic renal failure (CRF) is the final outcome of the development of multiple kidney diseases, and there is no effective method at home and abroad. Traditional Chinese medicine is found to play a major role in the treatment of the non-replacement stage of CRF. Shenkang injection can not only nourish the kidney, but also promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, which is suitable for the treatment of CRF. This study aims to explore the efficacy and safety of Shenkang injectio… Show more

“…From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), CRF belongs to the categories of “edema,” “Stranguria syndrome,” and “kidney exhaustion.” CRF derives from its close association with the spleen and kidney, that is, the spleen and kidney deficiency, deficiency of both qi and yin, and the accumulation of dampness and turbidity. Shenkang injection (SKI), a kind of Chinese patent injection composed of rhubarb, salvia miltiorrhiza, astragalus and safflower, has been extensively used to treat CRF ( 12 14 ). On the one hand, pharmacological studies have found that SKI can decrease proteinuria by effectively alleviating anemia and renal microcirculation, thus inhibiting the pathological proliferation of kidneys, which is conducive to reducing the damage to the kidneys, promoting the repair of damaged tissues, eventually improving renal function ( 15 ).…”

“…At present, it is believed that the essence of the progression of CRF is glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis under the alternating action of inflammatory and fibrogenic factors; however, still there is lacking of effective targeted prevention and treatment measures in clinic. In China, TCM has been in practice for thousands of years in the treatment of CRF and has showed number of remarkable results (Lu et al, 2018; Mei, Yang, Wang, & Wang, 2021). Buxu Xiaozheng recipe is a TCM preparation developed by famous and experienced TCM doctors, which previously reported to delay renal interstitial fibrosis progression by modulating the levels of inflammatory factors and oxidative stress in chronic kidney disease patients and rat mesangial cells (Ni, Zhong, & Cai, 2016; Zhong, Wei, & Xing, 2014).…”
