Efficacy of Fungicides and Bioagents against Damping off in Chilli caused by Pythium aphanidermatum

Abstract: Pythium damping-off of Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is very common problem in fields and greenhouses, whereas the organism kills newly emerged seedlings. In present investigation repeated isolations from rotten seeds as well as toppled seedlings of Chilli cv. Pusa Jwala have yielded the cultures of P. aphanidermatum. The damping off mainly being soil borne, the primary infections are needed to be controlled with suitable fungicides. The different fungicides and bioagents were evaluated as seed dressers and soil… Show more

“…In one of the recent studies, Bacillus subtilis subsp. subtilis, and T. harzianum significantly enhanced tomato plant growth and immunity when exposed to P. infestans (Bahramisharif and Rose, 2019), and T. harzianum proved effective in controlling damping off disease of chilli ( Capsicum annuum L. ) caused by Pythium aphanidermatum (Tekale et al, 2019).…”

“…The use of these marine bacteria and yeasts are, therefore, an option for P. ultimum biocontrol in ancho-type pepper plants, thereby minimizing the application of synthetic fungicides.Agronomy 2020, 10, 408 2 of 12 by immediate infection makes management of this phytopathogen very difficult [7]. Several Pythium species, including P. aphanidermatum, P. irregular, and P. ultimum, are known to cause damping-off and root rot diseases in pepper [8][9][10]. Although synthetic fungicides have shown promising results in controlling damping-off disease, phytotoxicity and fungicide residues pose serious problems to human and animal health, as well as the environment.…”

“…and Phytophthora spp. has been found (Taylor et al, 2002;Tekale et al, 2019). The increasing awareness of the environmental impacts of chemical treatments and of food safety has led to more and more restrictions on the use of chemical field and seed treatments to manage damping off (United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), 2006; European Commission, 2021).…”
