“…Development of controlled-release technology for the treatment of internal and external parasites of ruminants has important implications for future management of livestock diseases. Such devices combine ease of application with an extended period of protection against a range of internal 29,30 and external 31,32 parasites. They could be expected therefore to gain widespread acceptance among livestock producers, largely because of the need to treat animals less frequently, which in turn leads to savings in labour and animal stress.…”

“…Ivermectin can be used to kill nematodes and other endoparasites with an effect of 94-100% (1,2). It also has a good killing effect on the larvae of Gastrophilus intestinalis, Oestrus ovis, and the other ectoparasites, such as Psoroptidae, Linognathidae Enderlein, Sarcoptes scabiei, Haematopinus suis in bovine, ovis and swine (3)(4)(5). It is a safe and ideal drug for repelling endoparasites and ectoparasites, which is the most widely used in animal production.…”

“…Ivermectin (IVM) is a semi-synthetic member of the avermectin drug family, a series of 16-membered lactone endectocides first isolated from Streptomyces avermetilis in 1975 [ 3 ]. It is commonly used in humans, livestock and pets to control endoparasites, including parasitic helminths such as Onchocerca volvulus [ 4 , 5 ], Haemonchus contortus [ 6 ] and Dirofilaria immitus [ 7 ], and ectoparasites including scabies mites [ 8 ], bot flies and ticks [ 9 , 10 ]. Due to IVM’s strong safety profile in humans [ 11 ] and the fact that adverse reactions are rare and generally mild [ 12 , 13 ], it is distributed to entire communities in mass drug administrations (MDA) once or twice per year for control of onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis in Africa.…”
