“…Depending on the severity of disease and architecture of the resulting bone loss, periodontitis has traditionally been treated nonsurgically, by osteoplasty and/or ostectomy combined with ablation of the periodontal pocket, by regenerative surgery or using a combination of methods (48,64,196,224,340). Nonsurgical therapy generally includes intensive instruction in oral hygiene techniques, scaling and root planing, use of antimicrobial oral rinses and occasionally the local application of an antibiotic or use of a systemic antibiotic (158,164,176,199,295,297,331,394). This form of therapy is most often selected for Charring and pitting of exposed root surface following attempted frenectomy with a diode laser.…”

“…[28] Two other studies have investigated further controlled release systems of doxicycline. [29,30] One study compared doxicycline "biodegradable implants" (polymer fi lms based on poly-epsiloncaprolactone dissolved in dichloromethane and carbopol containing 60 mg of doxycycline hyclate) with a gel containing 25 mg of doxycycline which in contact with the GCF, allows a controlled release of the drug. [29] Thirty patients with chronic periodontitis with residual pockets greater than or equal to 5 mm were divided into three groups 2 weeks after causal therapy: The fi rst group received the application of doxycycline gel, the second the biodegradable implants, and the third only SRP.…”

“…Another study, however, has fi rst tested in vitro, and then in vivo, the effi cacy of the microspheres of doxycycline in patients with chronic periodontitis. [30] Fourteen patients were randomly assigned to two groups of 7 patients each. All patients received one session of SRP in full mouth; the control group received the application of microspheres doxycycline only at baseline, while the group tests at baseline, at 1 month and 3 months.…”
