Efficacy of Moringa oleifera Leaf Extracts against Cariogenic Biofilm

Abstract: Moringa oleifera leaves are beneficial for human health. Dental caries is closely related with cariogenic biofilm, which is an oral biofilm containing a high proportion of Streptococcus mutans. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effects of the M. oleifera leaf extracts on S. mutans and formation of cariogenic biofilm. Extract from M. oleifera leaves was derived using distilled water (DW) and ethyl alcohol (EtOH). S. mutans susceptibility assays were performed for each extract. Cario… Show more

“…In the same analysis, at the end of 14 days of treatment, according to the histological cuts, there was a greater reduction in the inflammatory process in the groups treated with Moringa, compared to the control group, with this reduction being even more pronounced in the Moringa group, 10%, it is suggested. this fact is due to its anti-inflammatory property (Jwa, 2019). It was also observed that in the 14-day treatment there was no complete reepithelialization of the wound and the presence of a tissue crust was also observed.…”

“…Streptococcus mutans causing dental caries is a matter of debate now. As per the study of Jwa (2019) M. oleifera leaf extracts showed antimicrobial activity against S. mutans and inhibits formation of carcinogenic biofilm by retarding its growth. In that study, M. oleifera leaf extract in distilled water (DW) and ethyl alcohol (EtOH) was tested in susceptibility assays for S .…”

“…This plant has been found to be specific against S. aureus, and E. coli but has no antifungal activity. Its antibacterial activities are responsible for its ability to alleviate toothache (Agbor & Naidoo, 2015, 2019Elgamily et al, 2016). In addition to the above, root decoction of M. oleifera is also used for treatment of toothache when used as mouth rinse as reported by Naidoo (2016, 2019).…”

“…M. oleifera leaf showed medicinal properties that improved human oral health care. MO leaf extract inhibited cariogenic biofilm formation and acted against oral pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus , Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans [ 55 , 56 , 57 ], whereas CC showed significant results for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action on S. aureus [ 44 , 58 ]. This present study revealed that the GI from baseline to week 4 in smoker group III (MO + CC lozenges) significantly decreased, indicating that MO + CC lozenges reduced gum inflammation in smokers.…”
