Efficacy of serum CRP levels as monitoring tools for patients with fascial space infections of odontogenic origin: A clinicobiochemical study

Abstract: Objectives:Study included 20 patients with diagnosis of fascial space infections of odontogenic origin to assess efficacy of serum CRP levels as monitoring tools for determining severity of infections, hospital stay and efficacy of treatment.Materials and Methods:Blood samples taken on Day 0, 4 and 8 for measuring serum levels of marker. Simultaneously clinical parameters like swelling size, pain etc. were also recorded on Day 0, 4 and 8 and appropriate treatment given to each patient. Correlation between mark… Show more

“…2). This correlates well with the clinical improvement and responsiveness to the therapy as proved by other studies [2,12,15]. Between baseline and day 1 a (5.32/95.4) 5.58 % increase in mean CRP levels was observed.…”

“…In the present study, the preoperative values of WBC count, CRP and ESR had a significant correlation with the severity of infection (p \ 0.01) as far as pain and mouth opening were concerned. The results of the present study are supported by the study of Sharma et al [7,8], in which regression equation implied that CRP was a significant predictor of pain and mouth opening on the day of presentation. We found that on day 4, there was a significant correlation (r = 0.440; p = 0.015) between mouth opening and WBC count.…”

“…Acute dental infections are a common cause of outpatient emergency visits to the maxillofacial department; classic signs of infection such as "Rubor", "Tumor", "Calor", "Dolor" and "Functio Laesa" are present to some degree in nearly all patients [1] [2]. Unknowingly, they are at a potentially life threatening situation due to the anatomical connectivity of one anatomic space to the other [1].…”
