Efficiency of thermomechanical reclaiming of ground tire rubber conducted in counter-rotating and co-rotating twin screw extruder

Abstract: In this article the results of research on a continuous thermomechanical reclaiming process of ground tire rubber (GTR) conducted in a twin screw extruder are presented. The effects of the rotation direction (co-rotating/counter-rotating), design of co-rotating plasticizing units and the rotational speed of the screws on the extruder working parameters, sol fraction and the degree of reclaiming in the obtained products were described. The influence of secondary vulcanization on cure characteristics as well as … Show more

“…Hence, end-of-life tires are a serious environmental concern and it's recycling is a must. Rubber reclaiming is one of the recycling methods applied to the waste rubber [4]. It uses thermal, mechanical and irradiation energies, with or without aid of devulcanizing chemicals (agents) to breakdown SeS bonds in vulcanized rubber networks.…”

“…They used several strategies for reclaiming (devulcanization) tire rubbers. They were included mechanical shear by two roll mill and a chemical agent [10e12], mechanical shear by an internal mixer and a devulcanization aid [7,9,14,16] mechanical shear by a single or twin screw extruder [4,13] and miscellaneous techniques using supercritical carbon dioxide and a chemical agent [6]. However, the produced devulcanizates had low degree of devulcanization, resulting in poor mechanical and dynamical properties when they revulcanized.…”

“…The devulcanizated materials would be suitable for producing new composite materials by mixing them with fresh synthetic or natural rubber [14,15]. Nowadays, there are several research groups trying to devulcanize the GTR by different processes such as mechanical [16,17], thermomechanical [18], mechanochemical [15], supercritical CO 2 [19], microwave [20], microbial [21] or ultrasounds [22].…”
