Efficient and Convenient Oxidation of Organic Halides to Aldehydes and Ketones Catalyzed by H5IO6/V2O5 in Ionic Liquid [bmpy][PF6]

Abstract: A mild, efficient, and eco-friendly procedure for the oxidation of organic halides to aldehydes and ketones in good to high yields catalyzed by H 5 IO 6 /V 2 O 5 in ionic liquid [bmpy] [PF 6 ] with no trace of overoxidation to carboxylic acids has been developed. The product can be isolated by a simple extraction with organic solvent, and the catalytic system can be recycled or reused without any significant loss of catalytic activity.

“…Oxidation of organic halides to ketones and aldehydes with H 5 IO 6 in ILs is illustrated in Scheme . Various types of benzylic, allylic, and aliphatic halides can be successfully oxidized to the corresponding ketones and aldehydes in high yields (88–98%) in [C 12 MIM][FeCl 4 ] at 30 °C. However, oxidation of less reactive aliphatic halides needs longer reaction times than other compounds.…”

“…1–3 Traditionally, benzaldehyde is prepared by the chlorination of toluene and subsequent hydrolysis. 4,5 However, the use of chloride in this process contributes to severe equipment corrosion and environmental pollution. In order to meet the requirement of sustainable chemical synthesis, it is urgent to explore effective strategies.…”
