Efficient high strength petrochemical wastewater treatment in a hybrid vertical anaerobic biofilm (HyVAB) reactor: a pilot study

Abstract: Performance of a pilot scale Hybrid Vertical Anaerobic Biofilm (HyVAB) reactor treating petrochemical refinery wastewater is presented here. The reactor is an integration of a bottom anaerobic sludge bed and a top aerobic biofilm stage and was operated continuously for 92 days at 21 ± 2 °C. Wastewater was fed continuously to the reactor with step flow increases reducing hydraulic retention time from 55 to 12 hours, increasing organic loading rate from 3 to 33 kg-COD/m3·d. The HyVAB removed on average 91% and 8… Show more

“…An integrated system combining anaerobic and aerobic processes can possibly take the advantages of both and achieve even better removal efficiency for chemicals that are not easily degraded by either anaerobic or aerobic process. An integrated system that is focused in this chapter can be a hybrid reactor consisting of an anaerobic and an aerobic system in a vertical design, such as a hybrid vertical flow anaerobic aerobic biofilm reactor (HyVAB) [9], provided by Biowater Technology AS, or a combination of different treatment processes in series, for example, a system consists of traditional anaerobic reactor and an aerobic stage in series. The performance of integrated systems for petrochemical refinery, oilfield-produced wastewater, and other oily wastewaters is presented in Table 4.…”

“…A membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) has been developed recently for organic and ammonia removal, based on an aerated membrane where biofilm attaches on the fiber [10]. Biofilm in the form of granular sludge for energy recovery (methane) from wastewater organics, such as by upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) [8,19], expended granular sludge bed (EGSB) [20,21], and internal recycle reactor (IC) [22], and aerobic granular sludge reactors for shortcut ammonia removal, such as anammox process [23], and for simultaneously organic, phosphor, and ammonia removal, Nereda [24] has been developed and is increasingly used in both industrial and municipal wastewater treatments.…”
